2020 Race Schedule
Includes future events and results of past races
1/1: NYRR Midnight Run (4 miles)
27:26 (6:51 min/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 24, Overall: 130th of 5209
The race started in Central Park at the stroke of midnight. There were fireworks, which I usually get a kick out of seeing, but the course had us running with our backs to the display. I’m not sure why my pace was so slow. Bundled up for the cold was a factor, but I just didn’t have it.
1/19: Naples Daily News Half Marathon (Florida)
1:25:10 (6:30 min/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 2, Overall: 61st of 1398
This was a much better performance than I was expecting - I was just 4 seconds off my national record of 1:25:06. Training had not gone well at all on account of an unexplained illness that had lingered on for months. This result gave me hope that I might have a shot at Ed Whitlock’s world record of 1:22:23.
2/1: Jed Smith Ultras 30K (Sacramento)
2:09:04 (6:55 min/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 2, Overall: 3rd of 24
This was a new national record, breaking the 2:13:01 set by Clive Davies in 1986.
2/8: Tarawera 100 (New Zealand)
34:01:50 (20:32 min/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 1, Overall: 164th or 199
This was my slowest 100 miler ever. It was a tough course - there was even a runner who died the day after finishing. I needed to complete the race in 30 hours to qualify for Western States, so if you are looking for an easy qualifier, this is not it!
2/22: Frostbite 5 Mile (Ambler, PA)
32:40 (6:32/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 20, Overall: 113th of 1268
A new race PR for me by four seconds. This the fourth time I’ve run this race since the first in 2013.
3/ 8: Los Angeles Marathon (with my daughter, Hilary Shirazi)
3:25:39 (7:50 min/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 106, Overall: 864th of 21877
This was a training run for both Hilary and me. We ran together for the first 20 miles, and then I picked up the pace a little more.
