2022 Race Schedule
Results of past races
1/17: Naples Half (FL)
1:41:23 (7:44/mile)Age Group: 1st of 10, Overall: 170th of 1064
I only managed to get in three days of solid training after a couple months off for vacation and injuries. Predictably, it was my worst half marathon finish time ever, but I was happy to kickstart the year with a good effort. A half hour after I finished the race, tornadoes swept through the area! Very rare for both that far south in Florida and for the month of January.
2/ 5: Forgotten Florida 45M(FL)
10:39:24 (15:13/mile, including one mile in a car shuttle)
Overall: 39th of 53
Course alterations because of wet terrain shorted the course to 42 miles. There was still a lot of wet terrain! Several stretches of shin deep water and/or sucking mud. Lots of wonderful single track, too, so it was a fun event. I was very pleased to feel strong the whole way despite its being my first ultra since last August. Granted, I didn’t try to run particularly fast!
2/19: Frostbite 5M (local)
34:58 (7:00/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 21, Overall: 122nd of 859
First Middle Atlantic USATF Road Race of the year. I ran about what I expected, but that is a long way from great shape for me. With a few more races (15 more in the next 16 weeks), I should be in much better condition.
2/26: USATF 5k (Atlanta)
20:43(6:41/mile)
Age Group: 2nd of 9, Overall: 114th of 225
USATF Masters National Championship Road Race
2/ 5: Old Pueblo 50M(AZ)
14:55:27 (17:54/mile)
Overall: 36th of 39
Warmup ultra #2 for the year
Tough scenic course. Total ascent of 7500 feet.
Two falls: one tripping on a rock, and one running into a tree branch.
One missed turn that cost me about 20 minutes.
3/11: Looney Leprechaun 10k (local)
55:33 (8:56/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 3, Overall: 27th of 96
Middle Atlantic USATF Trail Race
It was supposed to be a 20k race, but with nasty weather arriving, it was decided to shorten it. The trail was sloppy from the get go, and throughout the race, the rain changed to sleet and then to snow. The wind picked up, too. I don’t think too many runners were disappointed that they couldn’t go out for a second loop.
3/20: USATF Half Marathon (Syracuse, NY)
1:32:37 (7:04/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 18, Overall: 195th of 1976
USATF Masters National Championship Road Race
3/27: LOVE Run Half Marathon (local)
I was supposed to be a pacer for the 1:40 group, but I was suffering some pain in my leg, so I had to beg off.
4/ 3: Sactown 10 mile (Sacramento)
1:07:45 (6:46/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 12, Overall: 173rd of 536
USATF Masters National Championship Road Race
4/18: Boston Marathon (MA)
3:12:38 (7:21/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 195, Overall: 5820th of 28604
4/24: Canton Marathon (OH)
3:20:18 (7:39/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 3, Grandmaster: 3rd of 89, Overall: 19th of 468
A race down memory lane - the roads where I grew up.
5/ 1: Broad Street 10M (local)
1:07:12(6:43/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 87, Overall: 661st of 20472
5/4-10: Adventure Runs with Friends (UT)
Daily runs and hikes in the wonderland that is southern Utah. Kicked it off with a 37 mile crossing of Zion National Park. Warmup ultra #3 for the year. Hikes in Bryce Canyon and Goblin Valley. Hiking/running in San Rafael Swell slot canyons. Capped it off with a glorious 12 miles in the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park.
5/21-22: Soria Moria 100 (Norway)
I slipped on a root at mile 8 and landed hard on the side of my thigh. 10 miles later I had to quit because I could barely walk. A radiologist looking at the MRI a week later said the intramuscular hematoma was so severe that I was really lucky I didn’t break my femur.
5/30: Main Street Mile (local)
DNS
6/ 4: Cayuga Trails 50 (NY)
The one ultra that is on my calendar every year. This year both my daughters were entered, too! But… my younger daughter withdrew when she got pregnant, and I could still barely walk from my Norway injury. We cheered on my older daughter who finished first woman and eighth overall.
6/29-7/10: WMA Outdoors (Tampere, Finland)
DNS on account of my Norway injury.
7/22-23: Cascade Crest 100 (WA)
A tough 100 miler. This was my daughter Erica’s first 100-miler, and she did well, finishing in 31:23:20. I had a nasty fall on an icy snowfield (July!), but the course was just too tough for me anyway, and I dropped at the 70 mile aid station totally exhausted.
7/28-31: USATF Masters Outdoor (Lexington, KY)
USATF Masters Track and Field Championships. I knew this would be a tough go just five days after the Cascade Crest 100, but it was way worse than that. I’m embarrassed to report my results, finishing close to last in the 5k and 10k. I had to drop out of the 3k steeplechase when my legs gave out.
8/7: Grings Mill 10k (local)
45:40(7:21/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 8, Overall: 9th of 86
Starting to get my legs back.
8/14: Triple Trouble 15k (local)
1:23:50
Age Group: 1st of 5, Overall: 41st of 182
Middle Atlantic USATF Trail Race
8/14: Triple Trouble 30k (local)
3:15:13
Age Group: 1st of 1, Overall: 14th of 50
After completing the 15k, runners could do another loop for 30k (and another loop+ for 50k)
8/26-27: Hood To Coast Relay
This was my second year running with an all-70+ team. Twelve of us did three 10k-ish segments of the 199 mile race from Mt. Hood through Portland to the Oregon coast. We finished almost an hour ahead of last year with a 29:20:09. 4th of 8 teams in the M60+ division. That’s not to say everything went smoothly. It was chaos for a while, but everybody stepped it up to avoid disaster.
9/18: USATF 12k (NJ)
50:58 (6:50/mile)
Age Group: 2nd of 21, Overall: 95th of 299
USATF Masters National Championship Road Race
I knew that Robert Qualls would win my age group, but I was pleased to finish with the 4th best age graded score.
10/ 2: London Marathon [Wanda World Age Group Championships]
3:19:50 (7:37/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 160, Overall: 4037th of 40,562
I was hoping for something more along the lines of sub 3:10, but it’s hard to complain about a win. It was a bit of a surprise since the winning time last year was under 3 hours.
10/ 8: Indiana Trail 100
29:44:36
Age Group: 1st of 1, Overall: 126th of 130
I found this race because I needed a Western States qualifier (since I failed at Norway and Cascade Crest). I was pleased to discover this one since it fit into my schedule and it didn’t sound too technically difficult. It was a fairly friendly course in lovely woodland scenery in the aptly named Chain Of Lakes state park, but I managed to fall hard four times anyway, getting bad scrapes on my arm and forehead.
10/22: USATF Masters 5k XC, Boulder CO
25:42
Age Group: 10th of 27, Overall: 150th of 262
USATF Grand Prix Race
A total disaster. Undoubtedly the worst race of my life. I was gasping for air the whole way, and it wasn’t just because of the altitude - I was beaten by so many runners that I usually beat handily. I had only needed to finish 7th in my age group to win the year long Grand Prix competition.
10/23: Evansburg Challenge 10M (local)
1:30:17
Age Group: 1st of 6, Overall: 54th of 133
Middle Atlantic USATF Trail Race
I took a red eye from Colorado, drove home, changed into my running clothes, and made it to this race with a half hour to spare. Once again, great difficulty breathing in enough oxygen. I took a Covid test when I got home to see if that could explain my dismal performance, but it was negative. It was my worst finish time in this race by about 15 minutes and I’ve even gotten lost before!
10/29: Javelina Jundred 100 Mile
29:27:30
Age Group: 1st of 19, Overall: 384th of 700+
I signed up for this before finishing the Indiana Trail 100, since I might have needed it for my Western States qualifier. I no longer needed to go, but what the heck - I knew it would be fun and it was. Terrific weather - high about 80 and low about 50. I was the oldest ever finisher of the race.
11/ 6: Bridge Run 10k (local)
42:56 (6:53/mi)
Age Group: 1st of 6, Overall: 45th of 1317
Middle Atlantic USATF Road Race
11/19: Rothman 8k
34:27 (6:56/mi)
Age Group: 1st of 17, Overall: 185th of 3341
Middle Atlantic USATF Road Race
11/20: Philadelphia Marathon
3:56:14 (9:01/mi)
Age Group: 3rd of 25, Overall: 3389th of 8402
Middle Atlantic USATF Road Race
I ran the entire race with Jeannie Rice (age 74).
Temperature was near freezing with strong, gusty winds.
We both had a bad race, but she won her age group by about an hour!
11/26: Delaware XC 5k (local)
24:27 (7:52/mi)
Age Group: 1st of 8, Overall: 42nd of 114
Middle Atlantic USATF Trail Race
12/4: California International Marathon (Sacramento)
3:41:04 (8:26/mi)
Age Group: 1st of 26, Overall: 3490th of 8017
This was the last straw! Yes, I won my age group, but it was awful. The original plan for this race was to run sub 3. There is clearly something wrong. (Edit: a blood test did indeed find something serious)
I was very proud of my daughter Erica’s performance. I kept up with her for half the race, but she finished strong with a PR of 3:13:53.
12/10: USATF Club Cross Country (San Francisco)
38:54 (7:50/mi)
Age Group: 14th of 40, Overall: 134th of 241
Finishing 14th in a race that I would normally finish 1st or 2nd shows how bad I am now running. But, good news! There is hope that I’ll return to form in 2023 with the right medication.
