2024 Race Schedule

Calendar and Results

1/14: Naples Half Marathon (Naples, FL)
1:35:20 (7:16/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 8, Overall: 125th of 1100

Perennial race to kick off the season. Perfect weather but for a touch of wind. I was four minutes slower than last year, which is concerning.

1/20: USATF Club XC 8k (Richmond, VA)
37:36 (7:23/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 9, Overall: 148th of 176

I was a member of the 70+ team representing the Greater Philadelphia Track Club. My team tied for first, but lost the tiebreaker. I felt like I was flogging dead legs the whole race.

1/27: The Itch 50k (Ocala, FL)
7:19:06 (13:24/mile)
Overall: 9th of 15

Very nice low key event. Mostly single track. Always scenic point-to-point course. This was my second year in a row running this race with my friends from Stoked Oats.

2/ 3: Jed Smith Ultras 30k (Sacramento, CA)
2:15:45 (7:30/mile)
Overall: 3rd of 37

I ran this race once before in 2020 when I set a new M70 American record of 2:09:04. This year I would have had a good chance of beating the M75 record of 2:28:00, set by Ed Benham in 1985, but I had already beaten that during the initial 30k split at last year’s Chicago Marathon. I was unable to beat my own time of 2:15:00

2/17: Forgotten Florida 100 (FL)
18:56:15 [62.02 miles] (18:19/mile)
This was a mostly point to point race north east of Orlando (north west of Cape Canaveral). This was the first time I had to drop from a race because of hypothermia. In Florida, of all places. Steady rain the whole race, temps in the 50’s, and a course that deteriorated from lovely single and double track to an unending bog.

2/24: USATF Masters 5k National Championships(Atlanta, GA)
21:06 (6:48/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 9, Overall: 111th of 221

National champion!

2/25: Atlanta Half Marathon (Atlanta, GA)
1:44:35 (7:59/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 1, Overall: 23rd of 366

I opted to run with the 1:45 pace group for a decent workout without knocking myself out.

3/ 2: Looney Leprechaun 10k (local)
1:08:53 (11:05/mile)
Age Group: 2nd of 5, Overall: 37th of 102

A fun race I try to do every year as a part of the Greater Philadelphia Track Club team.
This year was a mud fest!

3/9: Catalina Island Marathon (CA)
5:14:10 (11:59/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 5, Overall: 125th of 438

I made a vow to start making time for races that have been on my bucket list too long, and this is one of them. I ran the whole race with my daughter Hilary, which made it extra special. And even more special, my older daughter Erica won the race, and she was fifth overall!

3/15: Australian Alpine Ascent 80k (Australia)
This was fun, but with a really stingy cutoff of 12 hours, I didn’t think I’d have much chance of completing it, and that’s how it turned out - I missed the 11 hour cutoff at mile 42.

3/17: Wangaratta Marathon (Australia)
3:56:55 (11:59/mile)
Age Group: 1st, Overall: 39th of 68

I really don’t like big city marathons, and this small town marathon was lovely. Two loops of bike paths in shady parks.

3/23: Kunanyi Mountain Run 66k (Australia)
16:40:41 (24:24/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 1, Overall: 127th of 127

This race took place in the mountains behind Hobart in Tasmania. Wow, this was hard. And not only that, it was terrifying. I was in great danger at least three times while navigating rocky cliffs with tenuous foot and hand holds. But, I survived, and had the great honor of finishing DFL (dead flat last).

4/7: SacTown 10 (Sacramento, CA)
1:15:12 (7:31/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 5, Overall: 182nd of 497

This was my second appearance at the SacTown 10. It was a whistle stop on my way to Austin for the total eclipse of the sun (which was clouded out).

4/15: Boston Marathon
3:28:43 (7:57/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 43, Overall: 9199th of 29330

Pretty warm, which led to almost everybody missing their goals… except my daughter Erica, who ran a marathon PR of 3:09 in her first Boston. I settled for setting a new age group course record

4/7: Revolutionary Run 5mi (Valley Forge, PA)
36:01 (7:12/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 5, Overall: 66th of 791
Hilly course!

4/28: USATF James Joyce Ramble 10k (Dedham, MA)
43:56 (7:04/mile)
Age Group: 1st of 12, Overall: 147th of 285

I set the national M70 age group record here five years ago, but I knew history would not repeat itself now that I’m M75. The current record is 40:12, set by Warren Utes in 1995. The world record is 39:25, set by Ed Whitlock in 2006. I did set the M75 course record.

5/4: Miwok 100k (CA)
DNF at mile 27
The weather was awful! Windy, cold, constant rain.

5/11: Dawn To Dusk To Dawn Track Ultras (local)
56 miles in approximately 12 hours.
I came up well short of the two national records in this 24-hour event. The current 100-mile record is 23:01:57, set by Ray Piva in 2002.
The current 24-hour record is 105.02 miles, set by Ray Piva in 2003. I suffered mightily for seven hours after feeling totally bonked after five hours.

5/19: Coventry Woods 10k trail race (local)
56:25 (9:04/mile)
Age Group: 2nd of 6, Overall: 35th of 107

It’s the slowest I’ve done this race by about five minutes. Uphills particularly slow.

5/27: Main Street Mile (local)
6:15 (6:15!/mile)
Age Group: 3rd of 8, Overall: 70th of 173

Ugh. I hate races this short, but it’s a local USATF race, so I took one for my team.

6/ 1: Cayuga Trails 50k (Ithaca, NY)
8:58:12 (17:19/mile)
Overall: 134th of 192

I really look forward to this race every year. The beauty of the course never gets old. This year, with nothing more in mind than an easy jaunt, it was about a pleasurable race as I’ve ever had.

6/30: Run For the Ages 10k (local)
59:35 (9:35/mile)
Overall: 1st of 180

I have a checkered history in this race (staggered start by age and gender). I won it three years in a row and then I got lost one year and broke my shoulder blade the year after that. What did this year bring? A return to winning ways! I ran very hard. After passing the four women who started ahead of me, I ran the last five miles scared, knowing there were 175 younger runners behind me hoping to track me down. I ended up winning by about four minutes.

7/6: Afton 50k (MN)
I DNF’d after the first 25k loop. Groin injury was too painful. My daughter, however, won for the 3rd time, placing 12th overall with a 4:27 Afton PR.

7/15-16: Pan American Masters Games (Cleveland, OH)
5k and 2k Steeplechase

7/18-21: USATF Masters Outdoors (Sacramento, CA)
5k, 10k, 2k Steeplechase, 1500m

7/27: Conquer The Canyon Marathon (PA)
I ran this race a couple times several years ago

7/28: Run For The Elk Marathon (PA)
A sister race of Conquer The Canyon.

8/22-27: Unreasonable EAST 200 Mile (Australia)
This is a sister race of the Delirious WEST 200 that I ran in 2018.

9/15: Sydney Marathon (Australia)
Wanda Abbott World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships.

9/21-27: East Coast Trail supported adventure run (Newfoundland, Canada)
I’ll be doing this with Adventure Running Company. I did similar events with them at Lake Tahoe and the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainier. I highly recommend this company for some running excitement.

10/6: Wineglass Marathon (Corning, New York)
Another race to cross off my bucket list.

10/20: Delaware Distance Classic 15k (Wilmington, DE)
I broke the national record in this race in 2018, but, alas, USATF refused to ratify it.

11/ 3: Cooper Norcross Bridge Run 10k (local)
Another annual ritual race

11/ 10: Las Vegas Marathon (NV)
A new race, starting in Red Rock Canyon and running almost all downhill to downtown Las Vegas.

11/23: Rothman 8k (local)
Part of the Philadelphia Marathon Weekend

11/24: Philadelphia Marathon (local)
I’ll be running with both my daughters.

12/1: Delaware Open XC (local)
